Basic Landscaping Design Principles

Simplicity is a common principle in various artistic and design professions, and landscaping is no exception.

Landscaping can quickly become an overwhelming project to handle for those who are inexperienced. Companies have been built around the expertise and professional knowledge of landscaping, making it much easier for their customers to achieve outstanding landscaping results!

Although the principles below are key to achieving a professional-looking lawn, one should never fear straying from what is “normal.” Going outside of what’s considered standard can help to set a lawn apart, but these principles offer a great starting point.

Simplicity

Simplicity is a common principle in various artistic and design professions, and landscaping is no exception. Avoid going overboard with projects and work on one detail at a time. With practice, later designs can be more ambitious.

Blend simplicity and unity by picking a theme of colors to use throughout the garden or lawn. For a minimalist look, use a sparse amount of décor and furniture.

Unity

Unity, sometimes understood as consistency and tasteful repetition, is one of the primary goals of landscaping. To create unity on the lawn, repeat specific elements, like plants, plant groups, décor, and furniture. Using these themes consistently throughout the landscape creates a harmonious, cohesive space.

Balance

The elements in a garden or landscape can either be symmetrical or asymmetrical. A symmetrical landscape is where elements are generally similarly shaped, equally spaced, identically colored, and so forth. Asymmetry is far more abstract and doesn’t necessarily “match” the rest of the landscape, but it can be beautiful when elements are placed with purpose.

Natural Transitions

Professional landscapers utilize the natural shape of the current environment and work it into their designs. Although it is possible to alter and shape the earth in new ways, sometimes it’s best to keep things as they are. There’s beauty to be found in using what has already been created.

If one decides to alter the landscape, it’s beneficial for the alterations to be natural and fit the theme, sticking with the other principles of unification, balance, and simplicity. Although one can stray from this and go for more exotic or exaggerated transitions, it may be more difficult to achieve without a professional. A professional landscaping company can answer all of the questions about landscaping, help clients formulate ideas, and even help with the project itself.
